TEXARKANA, Texas – The Texas A&M University-Victoria women's soccer team picked up a valuable point on the road Saturday in Red River Athletic Conference play.
The Jaguars went toe-to-toe with Texas A&M-Texarkana in what ended in a hard-fought 1-1 draw at Judy Kelley Morgan Soccer Field. It's the first time ever A&M-Victoria (5-2-3, 2-1-1) has picked up a result (win or draw) in Texarkana.
After a scoreless, but entertaining first half which saw the two sides combine for 16 total shots, Ayloni Garcia put the Jaguars in the driver's seat with a goal in the 54th minute. It was the ninth goal of the season and third over the last two matches for the McAllen native, who is on pace to challenge A&M-Victoria's single-season scoring record (14) set last year by Kyleigh Spree-Kolos.
The A&M-Victoria defense did its best to protect the narrow 1-0 lead with junior goalkeeper Jamie Noriega posting a season-high 11 saves. But the Eagles (8-1-2, 3-0-1) equalized in the 73rd minute on a goal from Lillian Miller.
Garcia, Rosa Reyes, Vanessa Bevalian and Siobhan Scott had multi-shot performances for the Jaguars. Scott led the team with three shots.
A&M-Victoria returns home next week for conference matches against Texas College on Thursday and University of the Southwest on Saturday.
