A&M-Victoria’s Fry, Garcia sweep RRAC weekly honors
WACO – The Texas A&M University-Victoria women's soccer team closed non-conference play strong last week, beating Huston-Tillotson 6-0 on Thursday thanks to season-high offensive production.
After that showing, the Jaguars swept the Red River Athletic Conference Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week honors with junior forward Ayloni Garcia named Offensive Player of the Week and senior goalkeeper Abree Fry earning Defensive Player of the Week.
It's the second time in as many years the Jaguars (3-1-2) have swept the awards and it's the third consecutive week A&M-Victoria has won the defensive honors with goalkeeper Jamie Noriega and defender Rosa Reyes winning it in each of the last two weeks.
"Ayloni is the type of player who will outwork everyone on the pitch. I'm very happy to see her hard work rewarded," said head coach Kimberly Uetrecht. "Abree did a great job coming in and making sure we secured the clean sheet. She is an incredible leader on and off the field."
Garcia earned the honor after scoring twice and providing two assists to up her team-lead in goals to five and points to 12. The two assists were her first of the season.
The McAllen native ranks third in the RRAC in goals, points and shots (21). She has contributed on goals in three of the last four matches for the Jaguars as they've gone unbeaten in their last five matches.
"I'm honored to be recognized as RRAC Offensive Player of the Week," Garcia said. "This award reflects the hard work of my teammates and coaches who support me every day, and it motivates me to keep improving and helping our team succeed."
Fry's honor comes after the Lancaster, California, native made her first collegiate start since October 2022 at Antelope Valley Community College.
The senior goalkeeper made four saves in the win over Huston-Tillotson for her first win and shutout as a Jaguar. She also recorded her first career assist.
It was A&M-Victoria's third clean sheet of the season, which helped lower the Jaguars' goals allowed average to 0.83 which ranks second in the RRAC.
"It's an exciting experience to be honored as Defensive Player of the Week," Fry said. "We have been continuously working hard to write our own story as A&M-Victoria and without my teammates, this honor wouldn't have been possible. I can't wait to see what more we can achieve."
The Jaguars hit the road to open conference play at LSU Shreveport on Thursday, and then at Louisiana Christian on Saturday.
