Texas A&M University-Victoria women's soccer first-year head coach Kimberly Uetrecht couldn't help but be impressed on Thursday.
She just watched her team dominate Texas Wesleyan, 5-0, in what was their best performance of the young season. It was also the team's largest win over the Rams in the team's eight meetings all-time.
The Jaguars (2-1-1) saw four different players get on the scoresheet to earn their second win in a row and extend their unbeaten streak to three games.
"It was awesome," Uetrecht said. "It was really good to see a couple girls get some goals. It was a great team win. The teamwork was on display and it's always nice to see a lot of people get goals."
A&M-Victoria peppered the back line of Texas Wesleyan (1-3-2) with a season-high 18 shots, 12 of which came in the second half. That led to four second-half goals for the Jaguars.
"We definitely asked them at halftime to shoot, which is great," Uetrecht said. "Knowing that we can go out there and execute what we're asking at halftime and also having the team make sure we secure that (shutout) at the end is important."
The Jaguars' saw Arantza Alva open the scoring in the 40th minute before Kaitlyn McCarty doubled the lead in the 48th minute. Jessica Salkeld, who assisted Garcia's second goal, capped the scoring in the 83rd minute.
Junior forward Ayloni Garcia led the attack in all categories with six shots, three on goal and two goals – both of which came in the second half. The first came in the 60th minute before the McAllen native fired a shot into the top corner five minutes later.
The UTRGV transfer has now scored three goals in the last two games.
"Everybody wants Ayloni to be confident on the ball," Uetrecht said. "It's very important to us. Again, nice to see a couple people score some goals and us execute what we've been practicing on the game field."
The Jaguars host Concordia University Texas at 1 p.m. on Saturday for Youth Soccer Appreciation Day presented by Crossroads Bank. All youth soccer players wearing their team's uniform gets free admission into the game.
