UHV’s Capuchino named RRAC Offensive Player of the Week
WACO – The UHV women's soccer team continues to rack up recognition early in the season.
On Monday, the Red River Athletic Conference named UHV's Luz Capuchino its Offensive Player of the Week for the week of Sept. 9-15.
The freshman from Garland had a goal and an assist in the Jaguars' 3-1 win over NCAA Division III Schreiner University on Friday.
This is the third consecutive week in which a Jaguar was recognized with a conference weekly honor and the fourth honor earned by the women's team this season. That's the most since 2015 when the Jaguars boasted 11 honorees en route to a record-breaking season.
"It's a great honor for the team, first off, and then for Luz," said head coach Adrian Rigby. "She worked hard and found herself in the right place at the right time to score her goal, and then had a good assist to Trine Stenderup-Jorgensen for the third goal. I think this speaks volumes for the team and the trajectory they're on. I think we're playing with a lot of confidence right now."
Capuchino made an impact in the second half of Friday's win over the Mountaineers, breaking a 1-1 tie with a game-winning goal in the 71st minute thanks to good combination play from Kyleigh Spree-Kolos and Estelle Flanagan. Her first career goal came two minutes after she entered the game off the bench.
She followed that up with an assist from a free kick in the 79th minute which Stenderup-Jorgensen finished with a confident header to provide the brace and improve the Jaguars' record to an unblemished 3-0.
"I'm honored to receive this award," Capuchino said. "I was very happy to contribute to our team's win with an assist and a goal."
Capuchino joins Arantza Alva as UHV players to earn the Offensive Player of the Week nod. Hayli Nichols has won two Defensive Player of the Week awards so far this season.
The Jaguars open conference play on Thursday at Texas College and then Saturday at Jarvis Christian.
