Women’s golf set for Blinn Spring Invitational
The UHV women's golf team will compete in the Blinn Spring Invitational on Monday in the final preparation for the Continental Athletic Conference tournament.
The Jaguars are coming off The Battle at the Primm two weeks ago.
In the tournament, Mia Lerma finished tied for 19th after closing the tournament with a 3-over 74. It was her the third time in the last four rounds the Mission native shot in the 70s.
Head coach Garrett Adair hopes that consistency continues at the Brenham Country Club on Monday.
"It's just the belief in themselves that they can do it and compete," Adair said. "We're not far off. We've talked consistency all year, which is a big thing, but going forward, I think it's going to be about positivity and believing in themselves."
Two weeks ago, Kaitlyn Lopez had a team-best three birdies in the opening round to shoot an 84 at the Primm Valley Country Club.
The Jaguars also had a strong showing from Evelyn Nguyen, who shaved two strokes off her opening round to shoot an 85 on the final day in California.
Cecelia Niemietz finished 12th and eighth in the Claud Jacobs Invitational and Schreiner Shoot-Out, respectively, before The Primm. She was named the Red River Athletic Conference Women's Golfer of the Week for the week of Feb. 27-March 5 after her performance at the Claud Jacobs.
"We're starting to hit our stride at the right time," Adair said. "Lopez has been playing well. She hasn't had as many rounds as the other girls and kind of the same thing with Evelyn. (Cecelia and Caitlyn Niemietz) are starting to come around. Now is the right time to fire on all cylinders. This week will be all about being as consistent as possible."
Monday's tournament will be one round.
