The Texas A&M University-Victoria softball team continues its homestand with another ranked opponent coming to town.
The Jaguars (21-12, 12-6) welcome No. 24-ranked LSU Alexandria to the Victoria Youth Sports Complex for a three-game Red River Athletic Conference series Thursday and Friday. The series kicks off with a 4 p.m. doubleheader on Thursday followed by the series finale at 12 p.m. on Friday.
A&M-Victoria enters the weekend in fourth place in the RRAC standings, three games behind the Generals (23-13, 15-3) who sit in second place.
The Jaguars are coming off a weekend which saw them earn their first ranked win of the season, defeating No. 21 A&M-Texarkana in Game 2 of that series.
Offensive fight
In last week's series against A&M-Texarkana, the Jaguars jumped out to a 2-0 lead in Game 2 and kept each of the two losses within reach thanks to good offensive play.
A&M-Victoria picked up 22 hits over the three games with Khamryn Werdlow leading the way with seven and hitting .583 during the series. Alyssa Carter, Madison Carr, Cristela Trevino, Daizie Fuentez and Angelina Morales had multiple hits across the series.
Trevino delivered the game-tying, two-run double in Game 1 to force extra innings.
The Jaguars' team batting average of .336 ranks third in the RRAC thanks to six players in the starting lineup hitting over .300. At home, A&M-Victoria's team average is .380 with eight players hitting north of .300 to help the Jaguars to a 10-3 record at home this season.
Going the distance
A&M-Victoria's starting pitchers of Zoe Hardy, Madelyn Butler and Kailea Freeman each threw complete-game efforts last week.
Hardy went eight innings, striking out four in the extra-inning loss. Butler earned her third win of the season by limiting A&M-Texarkana to two runs over seven innings. Freeman also went seven innings, limiting the Eagles to just three runs and giving the Jaguars a chance to fight back in the final game.
Scouting the Generals
LSU Alexandria is coming off a series win over No. 7-ranked OLLU last week, beating the Saints 10-2 and 6-1 in the first two games.
The Generals' Haley Fontenot and Lainee Bailey earned conference Player of the Week honors for their efforts in the series win.
These two teams met earlier this season, with LSU Alexandria earning a 3-1 win in the final game of the LSUA Tournament in Pineville, Louisiana, on Feb. 7.
