Men’s golf sets records at Poss High Country Shootout
RUIDOSO, N.M. – The Texas A&M University-Victoria men's golf team lit up their scorecards this week.
The Jaguars shot a three-round total of 842 (283-280-279) to set a new program record for lowest 54-hole total score and lowest tournament score to par (22-under) at the Poss High Country Shootout at The Links at Sierra Blanca.
Senior Paul Chopin closed the tournament strong, tying the single-round record of 65 to go 67-72-65—204. Junior Brandon Gratton matched Chopin's 204, going 71-67-66 as the two finished in a tie for 11th. Their respective 12-under par tournament totals tied the tournament record score to par set by Joshua Van der Wath last year.
Chopin was fifth among the field in birdies with 19 across three rounds while Gratton was tied for 11th in the field with 17. Gratton and junior Charlie Ward each had an eagle during the tournament.
The Jaguars had seven rounds under par with Simon going 72-71-73—216 (E, T-52), Edgar Hinojosa shooting 78-70-75-223 (+7, T-73) and Ward going 73-75-75—223 (+7, T-73)
Despite the phenomenal showing, A&M-Victoria finished seventh after Odessa College shot a 58-under 806 to edge out Midland College by one stroke. Thirteen of the 16 teams participating in the tournament finished under par at the 6,757-yard, par-72 track.
Next, the Jaguars will take on the field at the University of the Southwest's Battling in the Desert Oct. 6-7.
