A&M-Victoria’s Baker, Smith sweep RRAC Baseball Player of the Week
WACO – The Texas A&M University-Victoria baseball team can't help but continue to sweep.
After sweeping No. 1 LSU Shreveport and taking sole possession of first place over the weekend, the Jaguars swept the Red River Athletic Conference Player of the Week awards on Monday with Garrett Smith earning his second consecutive Player of the Week award and Jacob Baker earned his second Pitcher of the Week nod this season.
Smith used clutch hitting to win the award this week.
The Katy native had four RBIs against the Pilots and each of them proved important. In an 8-6 win in Game 1 on Friday, Smith delivered an RBI double in the seventh inning that proved to be the decisive run. In Game 2, Smith had a go-ahead, two-run single in the third to put A&M-Victoria up 3-2 before he delivered a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh to seal a series win.
Smith has driven in 44 runs this season, a mark which ranks second in the RRAC.
Baker shut down an LSU Shreveport offense which came into the weekend ranked at the top of most statistical categories in the NAIA.
The Cuero native produced a gem in the series finale on Saturday, hurling 6.1 scoreless innings with five strikeouts as the Jaguars went on to win 5-2 and sweep the Pilots for the first time since 2016.
Baker's 3.20 ERA this season ranks sixth among the RRAC.
The Jaguars go on the road to face LSU Alexandria Thursday and Friday. Thursday's game is scheduled for 5 p.m. while Friday's doubleheader is scheduled for 12 p.m.
