TEXARKANA, TX – A season-high offensive output led the Texas A&M University-Victoria baseball team to a series sweep on Friday.
The Jaguars plated 25 runs across both ends of a Red River Athletic Conference doubleheader to pick up wins of 9-4 and 16-6 over Texas A&M-Texarkana to close out the series.
The Jaguars (16-9, 7-2) maintained their second-place standing in the conference thanks to 27 total hits between the two games.
Two home runs by Garrett Smith and Jackson Purcell's six-RBI day highlighted the offensive onslaught.
This is the second consecutive sweep of A&M-Texarkana for the Jaguars.
Game 1
With the game tied, 2-2, in the second inning, Smith delivered his biggest blow of the game – a grand slam to cap off a five-run inning which gave the Jaguars a 7-2 lead they'd never relinquish.
He capped A&M-Victoria's scoring in the sixth inning with a solo home run, his team-leading seventh of the season.
Connor Kaiser picked up an RBI on a bases-loaded walk prior to Smith to make it 3-2 in the second.
Jackson Purcell's RBI single to center in the fourth plated Jose Montanez and swelled A&M-Victoria's lead to 8-2.
Smith, Montanez, Purcell and Roberto Olguin each had multi-hit performances in Game 1. Montanez's two RBIs joined Smith as the only two multi-RBI showings in the 9-4 win.
Reigning RRAC Pitcher of the Week Blane Zeplin turned in another gem on Friday.
The Victoria native pitched a complete game, giving up four runs – three earned – on six hits and two walks while striking out a career-high 11 batters for his fifth win of the season.
Game 2
The Jaguars opened Game 2 by scoring six unanswered runs across the first three innings to set the pace for what turned out to be a season-high 16 runs.
Smith continued his hot streak with an RBI single in the first inning before a sacrifice fly by Josiah Taylor and an RBI single by Antonio Benitez made it 3-0 in the second.
Purcell had a two-run double to score Beck Zimmerman and spark a three-run third inning. Olguin capped the inning with a sacrifice fly to score Montanez.
The Jaguars then plated three more runs in each of the fifth and sixth innings to go up 13-4.
An RBI triple from Purcell and RBI doubles from Olguin and Taylor compiled the scoring in the fifth. Purcell drove in another run in the sixth with a double before Olguin picked up an RBI on a two-run error by Texarkana's pitcher.
Purcell finished the game 3-for-3 with a career-high five RBIs and two doubles. Olguin finished 3-for-5 with three RBIs, as well.
