No. 10 Jags extend winning streak with shutout of St. Thomas
HOUSTON – The No. 10-ranked UHV baseball team extended its winning streak to five games after a comfortable win on Tuesday.
The Jaguars downed NCAA Division III St. Thomas (TX), 8-0, at Houston Christian University's Husky Field. With the win, UHV (30-7) eclipsed the 30-win mark in consecutive years for the first time since 2010-2011 when the team posted three straight 30-win seasons.
The Jaguars scored seven of their eight runs between the fifth and seventh innings, including breaking the game open with a four-run seventh.
UHV opened the scoring in the fifth with a two-run single by senior catcher Hal Perez before freshman outfielder Brady Thompson scored on a passed ball in the sixth to put the Jaguars up 3-0 at the time.
Thompson then kicked off the four-run outburst in the seventh with a two-run double before DeeAndre Torres was hit by a pitch and Jean Michael Gonzalez drew a walk, both with the bases loaded, to make it 7-0.
Thompson capped the scoring, coming home on an error in the ninth.
The Baytown native was 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs, three runs scored, a double and a triple to his name. Perez was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored.
Senior right-hander Mason Longoria earned his NAIA-leading 10th win after tossing six shutout innings, striking out seven while allowing just five hits and a walk to improve to 10-1 on the year. With the win, the Victoria native tied Julian Garcia's single-season record for wins, which was set last season.
Justin Mireles and Andrew Hurrelbrink combined to toss three shutout innings of relief behind Longoria. Mireles worked a perfect seventh and eighth innings with two strikeouts. Hurrelbrink allowed one hit and a walk while striking out a pair of batters looking to lock up the Jaguars' eight shutouts, which is a new program record.
UHV returns to Red River Athletic Conference play this weekend with a three-game series at Our Lady of the Lake at Missions Baseball Academy in San Antonio.
