The UHV baseball team faces two big non-conference bouts early in the season.
The Jaguars (3-0) host No. 13-ranked Mid-America Christian and No. 14 Central Methodist in the South Texas Shuffle this weekend at Riverside Stadium.
UHV and the Evangels, winners of the regular season and tournament titles in the Sooner Athletic Conference last year, will kick off the weekend's festivities with a 2 p.m. doubleheader on Friday before an early-morning matinee with the Eagles, 2024 Heart of America Athletic Conference regular season champs, at 9:15 a.m. on Sunday.
During Friday's games, the Jaguars are debuting their new uniforms through a new sponsorship with Del Papa Distributing Company, which was announced on Wednesday.
"There's going to be a postseason type of feel to the games," said head coach Jonathan Stavinoha. "These are two schools coming down that have been at the tops of NAIA Baseball. It's always a challenge when you have big guys like that coming down and there's gonna be big implications for all of our seasons."
UHV is coming off a season-opening sweep of Wiley University last week following wins of 10-0, 2-1 and 14-5.
Junior left-handed pitcher Brady Parker was named Red River Athletic Conference and NAIA Ball National Pitcher of the Week after throwing a no-hitter in the 10-0 season-opening win last week. The Victoria native struck out 11 batters while retiring 21 of the 22 batters he faced during his complete-game effort.
After the first week of the season, UHV ranks third nationally in ERA with a 1.96 following strong performances from starters Jonathan Jones and Mason Longoria, and six shutout innings of relief from Justin Mireles, Jacob Baker and Julian Garcia. Baker and Garcia earned saves in Games 2 and 3, respectively, last week.
"I can't say enough about what the pitching did last weekend," Stavinoha said. "It was great to see that fight. Now we just have to stay on and make sure to bring it every time."
Graduate transfer Cristian Garcia set the pace for the Jaguars with hits in each of the first three games last week, slashing .625 with a .750 OBP, 1.375 SLG, three doubles, a home run and four RBIs.
Senior catcher Hal Perez extended his hitting streak to five games dating back to last year's RRAC Tournament. The Camuy, Puerto Rico native has also hit in seven of his last eight games for the Jaguars.
Perez and Terry Burrel III also had home runs during the season-opening series last week.
DeeAndre Torres (3) and Xavier Ortega (2) enter this weekend on hitting streaks.
"We scored in multiple ways; it wasn't just the home run, which we hit a few of those," Stavinoha said. "It was doubles, manufactured runs. We ran the bases well and laid down some bunts to speed the game up. Having that ability is always a weapon and we hope to have that throughout.
UHV and MACU have met 12 previous times with the Evangels holding an 8-4 series advantage, but the Jaguars won three games in last year's four-game series. This is the first-ever meeting between UHV and Central Methodist.
