Coach Terry Puhl
Terry Puhl began his Major League Baseball career in 1977 with
the Houston Astros. In his first Major League game, Puhl got his
first hit and followed it with 1,360 more in a career that
spanned 15 years and 1,531 games. Over his 15 year career, Puhl
was a .280 hitter and one of the best defensive players to ever
play the game. Puhl continues to hold the Major League Baseball
all-time record for lifetime fielding percentage (.993) by an
outfielder. In the post-season, Puhl batted .372 (16 for 43) in
13 games.
Highlights of Terry Puhl’s career include being part of the
Astros National League (NL) West Division championship teams in
1980 and 1986; being selected to the National League All-Star
Team in 1978 and being named Canadian Baseball Player of the
Year in 1981.
In the 1980 championship series against the Philadelphia
Phillies, Puhl set a then NL Championship series record with a
.526 batting average in a losing cause. Puhl was a key part of a
strong nucleus of players that kept the Astros contending for
championships during the late 1970’s and 1980’s.
In 1994, Puhl was inducted into the Saskatchewan Sports Hall of
Fame. The following year, he was inducted into the Canadian
Baseball Hall of Fame. On November 10, 2006 Terry will be
inducted into the Texas Baseball Hall of Fame.
Puhl is also the head coach of the Canadian National Olympic
Baseball Team.
